Annie (Kristen Wiig) is overjoyed when her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) asks her to be maid of honour at her upcoming wedding. What Annie doesn't know is that Lillian has made a new friend Helen (Rose Byrne) and the two soon compete to organise the best wedding ever.
There are some fine comedy performances here. Wiig is perfect as the ditzy Annie and Melissa McCarthy is hilarious as the crass Megan.
Unfortunately, as is the case with many comedy films these days, all the funniest moments were shown in the trailer. There are laughs to be had but this is no female version of The Hangover, it's more of a romantic comedy.
It soon becomes a tiresome tale of a lonely woman looking for love and it's all as predictable as they come.
Mildly amusing but not what it appears to be, this is a chick flick masquerading as a middle aged American Pie.

Awww....I liked this movie. I thought it was hilarious. :P
ReplyDeleteThe romantic comedy part ruined it for me Zena. Not the worst film ever just not what I was hoping for.
ReplyDeleteI must have slept throughout the boring parts, because I loved it. Thought the romantic side FOR ONCE involved a believable male character that acted like he was believably in love, you know? Thought also that romantic part didn't take the whole floor.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I suggest you sit on this one and rewatch in a social situation (with friends over) You should give it a second chance...or I should give it a second viewing!
I agree with Ben! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you guys enjoyed it more than I did. As I said it wasn't terrible, just too tame and predictable. You just KNEW they were going to get together and it'd all work out in the end. In fact if you remove the toilet humour and swearing you're left with something a lot like Bridget Jones, complete with Jon Hamm in the Hugh Grant role and Chris O'Dowd as Colin Firth. Wish I'd thought of that for the review!
ReplyDeleteIt's a romantic comedy Ric :P It's written on the package. Of course they would end up together. Don't count on Hollywood to surprise you!
ReplyDeleteI must've been delusional Ben. We have a term here in the UK, a ladette, which is basically young(ish) women who drink and mess around without a care in the world. I was hoping that this would be a ladette movie.
ReplyDeleteAw, only 54%? I liked this one a lot, myself. I agree that a lot of the funny moments were shown in the trailer but I thought it was refreshing to see a comedy that really delved into the issues surrounding women's friendships on a more realistic level than most. And I'm a big fan of Kristen Wiig.
ReplyDeleteFrom the previews, I knew this wasn't a movie for me. I like comedy - a little - but this looked to slap stick for me.
ReplyDeleteI'm a hard person to sell on comedy - especially romantic comedy.
......dhole
Judging from the comments and other review it seems you are in the minority.
ReplyDeleteOne of the funniest films of 2011 for me although not for the prudish
I didn't get the realistic vibe Jennifer.
ReplyDeleteIt's difficult to find a really good comedy movie Donna.
Looks like you may be right about me being in the minority Neon but I'm anything but prudish.
