Preview: Before I Go To Sleep by S.J Watson

I've read a couple of sample chapters for this one that were supplied by Transworld Publishers.

It sounds very interesting and has already been optioned for film.

Here is a brief synopsis:

'As I sleep, my mind will erase everything I did today. I will wake up tomorrow as I did this morning. Thinking I'm still a child. Thinking I have a whole lifetime of choice ahead of me ...'

Memories define us.

So what if you lost yours every time you went to sleep?

Your name, your identity, your past, even the people you love - all forgotten overnight. And the one person you trust may only be telling you half the story.

Welcome to Christine's life.

  1. Yeah, there's a big buzz about this debut. Look forward to hearing your views.

  2. Yep apparently it's Ridley Scott's company that's doing the film version.

  3. as you probably know, I translated this book last winter for the readers in my country. I didn't really like it, it had a weak ending and it doesn't real justify the buzz. The author wants Blanchett or Winslet in the film, but I think both of them deserve better quality than this story.

  4. Dez, I'm sorry to hear that. There really is a lot of talk about this book. Instant bestseller, dontcha know.

Now how do I create that kind of buzz for my book when it comes out next year...

  5. Dez, I'm glad you haven't just went along with popular opinion, I'm even more curious about it now.
The publisher had a good campaign for this one Michael, sending out sample chapters etc. that helped build anticipation although I'm looking forward to your book without the need for any of that !

  6. well, the book might be good for less demanding readers :) As a professor of English literature, I do require a certain level of quality. This one is a book to be read and forgotten in one afternoon.

Michael, send me an e-mail, or send me a message at Facebook and will tell you some things about creating the buzz :)

  7. Curiosity got the better of me and I bought this on 3for2 at local Waterstones. A decent effort but not as good as the hype might suggest. I kinda lost interest half way through but it picked up during the last third. So it was "awright" rather than brilliant.

  8. Dez, sounds like you're a hard man to please but it looks like Michael agrees with you on this one. Curious to try it for myself.

  9. as Michael says, it starts well and promising with quite an intriguing idea of a woman who forgets everything when she goes to sleep, but then pretty much nothing happens, there's nothing original later on, and instead of some scientific and highly intriguing ending or some unexpected twist, it finishes with a pretty cheep crime novel ending. A typical example of a book which uses hype to promote what it doesn't really have.

And, yes, Ricks, I'm not easy to please, and I shouldn't be as someone from the industry and the literature world :)

  10. Dez, you must come across some real rubbish in your work, although I think it's a great job that you have doing the translations.
